(More customer reviews)Lets get one thing out of the way.This is an old, old game.The graphics are extremely basic.I first started playing this in the mid 90's on a Win 3.1 machine. Now to the good stuff.This may be the best 4x, turn based strategy game I've ever played.Yes, you find planets, resources, work up your technology and your opponents do the same.Then you try to wipe each other out, although the victory conditions don't require play until the bitter end.With Stars! however, you don't just work technology up to be able to build a better ship, you gain components to design your own.In Starcraft, you had 3 races with preset strengths and weaknesses.In Stars! you have many more and an ability to build a custom race down to the last detail of game relevant abilities.Differing planet habitability, customizable units and races, terraforming, planetary bombardment, huge fleet battles, etc...its all good and all with more options you'll find anywhere.
The best part though is, even with all those options, Stars! suffers from none of the overwhelming issues that other 4x games have in micromanaging all your plantets, potentially hundreds of ships, etc.Quite frankly, it is the best most well layed out, simple but effective interface ever.Need different resources from different planets...set fleets of transport ships to curcuit around to them all...picking up one type of mineral or colonists and droping off differing quantities of either all to your exact specifications.Auto set new worlds for a standard set of production to get them running.Set multiple waypoints for your fleets so that they can run for many turns at a time without you having to baby them.The play by email ability is great since its turn based.Every game have a file and one person generates the turn, sends to the rest.
Bottom line, one of my favorite games ever for both the efficiency of its interface and the complexity of the the options you can do.I'd almost wish someone would update the graphics but would be too afraid of them screwing up the rest :)If a good game is more important to you then graphics...this is worth a look.One disclaimer I'd put the one listed here is, I don't see what version it is.I think the latest was 2.7 but not sure.They are all very good, but the latest was the best I think.
