Over the years, I have purchased many arcade classics--a Pac-Man table with 24 Pac-Man board-based games, Donkey Kong, Crazy Climber, Time Pilot, Rampart, and a few others... and I eventually got bored of all of them.
There is a great truth of life to be learned here--few things are as dull as an arcade machine set on free play.Arcade games as a rule are ultra-tough, short, flashy.They are machines that were created to offer a 30-second entertainment blitz.When you set them on free play, people finish them, learn their patterns and secrets, and turn that 30-second blitz into a regular feeding.
The thing that makes arcade games fun is the knowledge that if you mess up, you have just wasted a quarter.If you get shot one more time...If the ghosts trap you just once more...If Bald Bull or M. Bison or Johnny Cage lands one more punch...
I have found and exception to that rule, and it is Puzzle Fighter.
Puzzle Fighter combines the relentless stacking of Tetris with the head-to-head dueling of a fighting game.(The two-player simultaneous play is major factor in this game's long play value.) When you clear gems from your side of the screen, you dump them on your opponent's side of the screen.When he/she clears gems from his/her side of the screen, he/she dumps them on your side of the screen.Somebody is going to get buried by an avalanche.
Game connoisseurs may argue that Puzzle Fighter is a remake of Puyo Puyo.It's a fair argument only so long as you are willing to call Puyo Puyo a remake of Tetris.Just as Puyo Puyo built on the Tetris formula by adding chain reactions and connecting blocks, Puzzle Fighter builds on Puyo Puyo by adding timed gems that turn into regular gems after a certain number of drops.It also adds a much needed sense of humor.
I will not argue that Puzzle Fighter is the greatest arcade game of all-time, though I do consider it one of the better ones.(For the record, I believe the best arcade game ever to be Tempest.)I will say, however, that Puzzle Fighter holds up well as a great arcade game to own.You simply do not get tired of it.
Short of owning the arcade machine, you should try it on your home consoles.Capcom published a sensational version of Super Puzzle Fighter for the PlayStation and Saturn game systems.The Game Boy Advance version is a bit disappointing, but that is due to limitations in the hardware.
